Meeting Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: A Dream Come True and a Call to Action for Handcrafted Artisans

One of the happiest moments of my life was meeting our late former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, and receiving the Outstanding Women Entrepreneur award from his hands in 2013. This honor, given by the Federation of Small and Medium Industries (FOSMI), recognized my work with the artisans of the Bankura district. Dr. Kalam's presence that day ignited a deeper passion within me and affirmed my commitment to the artisans of Bankura.
"You have to dream before your dreams can come true." – Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
Dr. Kalam's words resonate deeply, emphasizing the power of dreams and the relentless pursuit of excellence. It is this dream—to elevate the crafts of Bankura to a global platform—that fuels my energy and motivates me each morning.
Yet, meeting Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was not just a dream fulfilled; it was a blessing. It reinforced the importance of preserving and promoting the incredible craftsmanship of the artisans of Bankura.
The Importance of Handmade Art and Dhokra Craft
Handmade art forms, especially Dhokra, are not just products; they are embodiments of cultural heritage, skill, and tradition passed down through generations. The intricate patterns and designs of Dhokra, an ancient metal casting technique, tell stories of our past and reflect the rich history of India's tribal communities.A 4000 year old technique, alive and kicking. A marvel indeed!
My Journey with Dhokra
Recognizing the immense value and potential of Dhokra craft, our team has been dedicated to supporting and promoting the artisans of Bankura. Our journey has involved:
Empowering Artisans: Providing training, resources, and fair wages to ensure that artisans can sustain their livelihoods and continue their craft.
Promoting Sustainability: Emphasizing the use of natural and locally sourced materials, and advocating for eco-friendly production methods.
Expanding Market Reach: Bridging the gap between traditional artisans and global markets by showcasing Dhokra jewelry on international platforms.
Preserving Cultural Heritage: Celebrating the cultural significance of Dhokra and raising awareness about the importance of preserving these art forms for future generations.
Meeting Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was a moment of immense joy and inspiration, reminding me of our responsibility to nurture and promote our cultural heritage. Every piece of Dhokra jewelry we create at Miharu is a tribute to the artisans of Bankura, a celebration of their skill, and a commitment to their future.
